Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
